Liliana Fava
Hi! My name is Liliana Fava, and I am a senior at Gill St. Bernards High School. I live in Lebanon, NJ. I am passionate about Marine Biology and excited for what the future holds. I love to travel and have visited various places in the past few years. From ballet recitals to the boxing ring, I established both athletic and interpersonal skills enhancing my self-confidence.
Travel:
Traveling the world has been a lifelong dream of mine. This May I visited the Netherlands and studied environmental sustainability, for a week, with a selected group from my school. My travels out of the United States have included Italy, Scilly and Aruba. I have also visited 17 out of the 50 states. I love to travel and learn about different cultures as well as the beautiful architect and history that lies in each place
Marine biology:
The vastness of the ocean and the mysteries that lie there have always intrigued me. My love for the ocean started when I was young but only recently have I been able to pursue it. The summer of my sophomore year I attended a college course for Cornell University at Shoals Marine Laboratory, titled “Introduction to Sharks, Skates, and Rays”. This was a one-week course on Appledore Island. There, I was able to dissect, fish, and learn about many species of sharks. I earned one college credit here. In the Spring of my junior year, I did a month-long Internship at Loggerhead Marine Life Center in Jupiter FL. Here I worked alongside marine veterinarians with mainly turtles but also sharks and small fish. The summer of my junior year I headed back to Appledore Island and took part in another course through Cornell University at Shoals Marine Laboratory, titled “Marine Environment Science”. This was a two-week course and here I learned about the microscopic organisms living in our oceans along with the detrimental effects people and climate change have on the oceans. Here I received 3 college credits and a college recommendation letter from my professor. I will be going back next summer as a teacher's aide for this course.
Sports:
I have been integrated into a considerable amount of sports. I have participated and played in the following sports: Soccer, basketball, tennis, dance, boxing, snowboarding, surfing, baseball, softball, field hockey, lacrosse, volleyball, and golf. From each of these sports, I was able to learn what it really means to be on a team and how much a combined effort of knowledge and skills can do in achieving a shared goal. The sport that stuck with me the most was volleyball, I have been on travel teams for eight years and love to teach my knowledge about volleyball to the underclassmen in my school. I hold off-season practices once a week and there I am able to help the girls in my school better their skills so they can also succeed in volleyball during our season.
